Plant Grown Dairy?

  • B.linc Workshop Lincoln University Campus Lincoln New Zealand (map)

New Zealand start-up Miruku is one of a small number of companies globally who are planning to use plants to produce proteins and fats similar in structure to those present in bovine milk. The idea of transforming plants to produce valuable proteins is not new. It is more than 30 years since scientists first produced recombinant human proteins in transgenic plants. However, what is relatively new is the idea of using plants to produce recombinant proteins at large scale as part of a more sustainable food system.

This presentation will provide an overview of the following:
- What is molecular farming and who are the key companies globally?

- How does molecular farming compare with precision fermentation?
- What is Miruku hoping to achieve using molecular farming?

- Is molecular farming set to replace animal dairy?
